Santo Antão is a stunning island that feels super tranquil, yet it is slowly gaining in popularity. As I explored the city, I noticed a remarkable number of houses under construction—it was almost overwhelming. I couldn’t tell if these developments were by Cabo Verdeans or foreigners. My only hope is that the island retains its soul and charm, as its quaint and peaceful atmosphere is one of its greatest assets.
The streets of Santo Antão are impeccably clean, and the architecture is both colorful and captivating. Walking around downtown is a treat for the senses. Wherever you turn, you are surrounded by hills, colorful buildings, majestic mountains, lush trees, or the vast ocean. Every stroll in Santo Antão feels like a scenic adventure.
In terms of activities, I found the options limited to hiking and enjoying the beach.
Despite researching online and consulting tourism books, there weren’t many excursions available. The tourism industry here hasn’t developed to the extent it has in other islands like Boa Vista. That said, Santo Antão is perfect for couples and families who want to unwind, soak up the sun, and explore the island’s hiking trails. My guide assured me that family-friendly tours are available, so even children can enjoy the island’s natural beauty.
For the second leg of my trip, I stayed in a hostel.

During the high season, the owner mentioned, the hostel is bustling with backpackers who come specifically for hiking. They host theme nights, bring in musicians, play games, and create a lively atmosphere. However, since I visited during the low season, the hostel and the city were both relatively quiet. Ultimately, I decided to leave a day earlier to return to Mindelo, my favorite city.
If you’re seeking peace and quiet, visiting Santo Antão during the low season in May is ideal. You can enjoy local restaurants without long waits and hike without encountering crowds. In fact, I was the only person on my tour, and I only crossed paths with one other group of three hikers. Santo Antão is a hidden gem for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and connect with nature. If you want to know the name of my hostel, drop a comment.
