If you want to get a better sense of cabo verde history, I would encourage you to visit the Museu dos Naufragos or Museum of the rescued.

During your visit, you will learn about the slave trade, how Boa Vista was impacted by famine, how the independence movement grew in the archipelago, and who were its leaders. Although the museum is small, the visit is worthwhile: the staff is super knowledgeable and can offer you a guided visit (the museum actually offers a lot of guided tours to local schools) and there is a shop with a snack boutique on site.

The museum house a lot of objects that were drown in boats from slavery time and ended up on Cabo Verde's shores.

A fun fact that I learnt during my visit, is that the infamous Medusa's story, was actually written by greek poet Hesiod, who was inspired by it, while navigating the agitated waters around the Cape Verdean islands. This proves that the Portugueses were very far from being the first one to set their eyes on the archipelago.

When planning your visit, just remember that the museum only opens in the morning; I went there just before taking my flight to Praia. Before leaving, do not forget to take a picture of the wonderful mural on the roof of the museum. It represents the locals who used to hunt whales back in the days, it is a real beauty!
