Viana Desert was next on the itinerary. It’s smaller than I imagined, but still very impressive, like a mini Sahara! It’s similar to the dunes, but the sand isn’t by the ocean, and the dunes are much taller. My guide mentioned that some people slide down the dunes on planks, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The bottom is rock-solid, and you could really hurt yourself if you’re not experienced. In fact, he told me that just the month before, a tourist broke his arm doing exactly that. So, take care, people!

That said, Viana is a fantastic spot for Instagram-worthy shots. I was lucky enough to have the place almost entirely to myself!

Finally, Road 66—one of my favorite stops! This iconic road is paved, much like in Portugal, with beautiful trees that resemble palm trees lining the sides, and sand dunes stretching out on the horizon. It feels like you’re in the Arizona desert, but you’re actually in Boa Vista, on a totally different continent! There really is no place like Africa.

I took tons of cool pictures and boomerangs here too. Be sure to visit during the day for the best lighting.

Before heading back to my hotel, I made one last stop at Fundo das Figueiras, a charming village that stole my heart. This quaint spot in Boa Vista is adorned with vibrant bougainvillea and hibiscus trees, giving it a colorful, picturesque atmosphere.

As you stroll through the village, you’ll come across a beautiful church, a lively playground, and a small souvenir shop run by a friendly Senegalese man.

Fundo das Figueiras is also home to a Turtle Protection Foundation, which plays a crucial role in safeguarding the island’s turtle population. I learned that they patrol the beaches at night to protect turtles and their eggs from poachers—an inspiring effort to preserve Boa Vista’s natural beauty.

The village itself is delightful, but the highlight for me was the incredible meal I had at a local restaurant. Hands down, it was the best food I tasted in Boa Vista! The portions were generous, and every bite was bursting with flavor. I usually find that touristy spots don't always have the best food, but this place was the exception. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but I’m sure it’s the only one in town, so you’ll find it easily. If anyone knows the name, please share it in the comments below!
